Beers Of The Beano - Saturday 013 April 2024

Spring finally arrived in The Semi Beautiful Lower Rhymney Valley and today it’s gone again. The plan today is to test out the newly refurbished Carpenters Arms in Newport. Apparently there will be craft ales from Flowerhorn and Tiny Rebel and on cask too. Hope the WiFi has been refurbished as well.

The all 50A bus to Newport was 9 minutes late as accurately predicted by the Stagecoach app.  In the very back of The John Wallace Linton and I think there maybe some Sun.

Mostly Welsh cask in the John Wallace Linton

The review

1927 - Glamorgan Brewery - 4.5% ABV. B+ and a bit. Hasn’t really settled but no problem. Bittersweet and nicely malty. Good start #ale #beer #bier

3.3/5. The year Cardiff City won the FA Cup. Spring was here yesterday but it’s gone today. A happy start to the day.

The review

Welsh Pale Ale - Evan Evans - 4.1% ABV. B+ and a touch, malty, earthy, fruity with a gentle bitter finish #ale #beer #bier

3.1/5. Is earthy, not an unpleasant term, a thing with Beers nowadays? I am using it more and more. John Wallace Linton #Newport

I could become the official beer taster of the John Wallace Linton. Free sample too Sea Scape from Evan Evans B+and a touch 3.1/5

On to The Carpenters Arms, where the Barman was outside, taking photos of it. So I did the same.

First of all the welcome was excellent, however the Flowerhorn was on Keg, although it did taste mighty fine. There were three keg lines for Tiny Rebel and one for cask. As in the Pen and Wig, I could connect to the WiFi but I couldn’t get an IP address. Both on iOS and Android. I’m sitting closer to the window next time.

Keg selection.

Cask selection

The review

Yawn - Flowerhorn - 4.7% ABV. B++, malty, fruity, tropical with sweet confectionery. On Keg and a branded glass. Works for me #ale #beer #bier

3.5/5. At the refurbished Carpenters #Newport Great Barman but like the Pen and Wig can’t get on the WiFi. Life mostly.

Chips made from Maris Piper from the Harbour Fish Bar and Newport Railway Station in the background.

It was a bit blowy when I got to the Lamb and I had completely forgotten about the Grand National. So, no sweep for me.

The review

Nice and malty. Downgraded to a session ale. #ale #beer #bier

Moving on to the Pen and Wig (Newport) which was full of football fans, there for the 12:30 kickoffs. They mostly disappeared when the matches ended.

The review

Nice and malty. Downgraded to a session ale. #ale #beer #bier

After much thought The Weird Dad Taproom is going to be my Saturday Afternoon in Newport, hangout. It’s all about the Beer and the WiFi.
