Beers Of The Beano - Saturday 11 May 2024

Mild May? Have you seen any Milds this May?  I haven’t, which is a shame, as I do like a Mild. I have a feeling that it is more to do with alliteration than the month of May itself.  However Summer has now arrived, for a while, anyway and I’m hoping to see some Golden Ales. I mean, we call live in hope. My CAMRA beer voucher is ready and it’s Newport again, this week.

Saturday morning in the John Wallace Linton in Newport. Hardcore drinkers, people in for breakfast, people waiting for trains and stag / hen dos. The best place in the world for people watching. The CAMRA 50p Beer voucher was deployed.

Citra - Oakham Ales - 4.2% ABV. B+ and a bit, the trouble with cask ales is that they go over quickly. Still drinkable but been better #ale #beer #bier

3.3/5. However, the CAMRA 50p voucher was deployed. So you win some, you lose some. Springlike in Newport 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🍻

Testing out the new Stella Artois Unfilterted, brewed in the UK. Despite having Belgium on the front label.

The review

Stella Artois Unfiltered - AB InBev - 5.0% ABV. B+ and a bit. Says Belgium on the front but brewed in the UK maybe Magor? Rather good #ale #beer #bier

3.3/5. Fruity, hoppy and bready with a pleasing dry fruity finish. Really sort of old school. Well worth a punt?

Moving onto to the Pen and Wig in the now returned Summer Sun. It was shut despite when peering through the window I could be people inside. So I decided to go to The Carpenters, only to find the Bar Manager waving at me. She had forgotten to unlock the front door. Look what I found inside?

The review

Blŵbri - Bragdy Twt Lol - 4.6% ABV. B+ and a bit, hoppy, fruity and a little malty sweetness. Gentle and refreshing. Works with the weather #ale #beer #bier

3.3/5. The Mamas and the Papas on the jukebox and Sky Sports on the TV. Twt lol on my palate and the sun is shining. Quality Beanoing.

SIBA Assured Independent, well it’s all grow with our local brewers. Talking of craft, I needed some quality chips.

With Maris Piper Potatoes and purchased from The Harbour Fish Bar, plenty of Salt and Vinegar, they were a very tasty way to start me afternoon. Crossing the bridge it was off to spend the afternoon on Weird Dad’s.

Nicely cool, Cask forward and a new SSID. I was straight into the drink LocAle.

The review minus the Dry Robe

Goldie Looking Beer - Weird Dad’s - 4.6% ABV. B+ and a bit. Malty, fruity, hoppy and bitter. Cooling with an earthy, bitter finish #ale #beer #bier

3.3/5. Rather hot out, cool and refreshing in Weird Dad’s. Re the pint, if you know, you know 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🍻

Already complaining about the lack of Milds in May, Weird Dad comes to the rescue.

As Mild’s go it’s nicely malty and tingly on the tongue.

The review

Mine’s a Dark - Weird Dad - 3.5% ABV. B++, finally a Mild in May and it’s a Corker. Malty, with a touch of fruity and very tingly on the tongue #ale #beer #bier

3.5/5. Finally a Mild in May and it’s awesome. Black Pudding Scotch Eggs on sale here and they are calling me. I wonder?

Onto the cans and a rather wonderful Collab.

The review

Blood Orange, Apricot and Lime Smoothie Sour - New Bristol Brewery / Yonder Brewing - 6.0% ABV. B++, Summery, fruity and tropical with a gentle sour edge. Solid #ale #beer #bier

3.5/5. Collab Saturday in Weird Dad’s Taproom #Newport 🍻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿Fine Ale from across the bridge.

And that was it for the day as I wandered back to the bus station in the Late Spring / Early Summer Sun.
