Beers Of The Beano - Saturday 13 July 2024

It is already the time of year where a Saturday night Mini Beano away is at silly prices.  And the schools have even broken up yet.  These are the times when the bus pass comes to the rescue.  A sunny start but rather fresh. Testing out my new Anker earbuds to see if I can get a day out of a single charge. Starting in Costa Coffee Newport Station again.

There is something about Spoons first thing on a Saturday morning, in this case The John Wallace Linton, Newport.

One minute before it opens at 08:00 and I have my CAMRA voucher locked and loaded.

The review

Mayflower Session IPA - Southwark Brewing Co - 4.2% ABV. B++, malty, hoppy, grapefruit with a lingering citrus, bitter finish #ale #beer #bier

3.5/5. With Sorachi Ace Hops and Oats, ingredients you don’t often see together. Great beery start to Saturday morning #Newport

The review

Dissolution IPA - Kirkstall Brewery - 5.0% ABV. B+ and a bit, nicely balanced malty and hoppiness. Grapefruity with a citrus, bitter finish #ale #beer #bier

3.3/5. Think it’s fresh on as I’ve upped the rating since my last pint of this. Saturday mornings are really the best time for Fine Ales.

As I am a creature of habit, it’s on to the Pen and Wig. Via the ATM, where it get my chip shop money.

The Pen and Wig Newport on a sunny Saturday morning

The Sunny Pen and Wig

I’d forgotten there was Rugby on, so it was fuller than normal but not too full. Wales lost by the way.

It’s what Beanoing is all about

The review

Atlas - Welbeck Abbey - 5.0% ABV. B++, gently malty but then there’s a shed load of hops. Gently fruity, bitter finish and its dry #ale #beer #bier

They use Maris Pipers

£2.80 for regular tray of chips

Went heavy with the salt and vinegar

Loaded up with food at Tescos for tea and then it’s across the river to Weird Dad (13:00 opening)

Newport Castle in the background.

It’s 10 minutes from the Market Bus Station to Weird Dad’s. That’s walking at a steady pace.

Arriving at 12:59.

I am now the Mayor and it shows up as a Brewery in The Swarm App. Mainly because it is a Brewery. Cask to start but there was only a half left.

A half of Norther Lights from Ainsty Ales in a Pint Glass in front of it pump clip

3.6/5. It would be an awesome Summer Ale if it wasn’t so grey and looking like rain. However, hunt this little corker down!

A poured can of Ain't There Nothing I Can Take from Pomona Island

The review

Ain’t There Nothing I Can Take? - Pomona Island - 6.5% ABV. B++ and a bit Complex , sour, bittersweet, tart and fruity. Wonderful #ale #beer #bier
