Beers Of The Beano - Saturday 15 June 2024
With less than a week to the longest day of the year, it’s grey, wet and cold with the wind getting up later. Still, it’s Beer Day Britain, so Newport for Fine Ales with my CAMRA vouchers.
Taking the long way to The John Wallace Linton and getting rained on. Not a great selection of Cask Ales on but the staff are friendly and the WifI is fast. Starting with…
The review
Great Bustard - Stonehenge Ales - 4.8% ABV. B+ and a bit, malty, rye, with a hint of fruity bitterness. A lingering complex finish #ale #beer #bier
3.3/5. Upped the rating from last time. In Newport 🏴 and it’s heavy, steady rain. CAMRA voucher deployed again.
I drank it all, it was just that it wasn’t on top form.

When you drink enough of this, you know when it is over the hill. Nicely presented and topped up without asking. All part of the Cask Drinker’s journey.
Moving on via the ATM for cash for chips and then on to The Pen and Wig (Newport).
The rain had stopped and it was time to choose my Cask Ale. They had a Cider but it was too sweet. Tasters are supplied.

Mumbles Amber - Mumbles Brewery - 4.1% ABV. B+ and a bit. Malty, fruity, bittersweet and fruity bitter finish. Summerish #ale #beer #bier
3.3/5. The Pen and Wig, Newport where someone has left a pair of pink trainers outside and the is sweet fruity cider inside.

Post chips and a touch of shopping in Tesco Express, it was over the bridge to Weird Dad’s.
Starting with Cask because I am CAMRA after all. Yes, I had been reading Boak and Bailey this morning.
The review
Cool Citra - Ainsty Ales - 4.4% ABV. B++, big sharp and citrus. Strong and lingering citrus and bitter finish #ale #beer #bier
3.5/5. Confused weather, Tesco and then onto Wirrd Dad. However, Craft Ale on Cask. Maybe even some Euros?
Then streaming some Euro Football on the radio. That and The Windows Weekly Podcast.
The review
Cary’d Away - Neon Raptor - 5.0% ABV. B++, fruity, juicy, hazy with of pepper. Solid, quality brew #ale #beer #bier
3.5/5. Streaming Hungary - Switzerland and drinking Nottingham in Newport. Bit blowy out. Happy Saturday Afternoon.
And then the finisher, in all senses of the word. Also, it was from Bridgend.
The review
Play Dead - Dog’s Window - 11.0% ABV. B++, strong, Pilsner, Boozy and Belgian. Very solid Ale from Bridgend #ale #beer #bier
3.5/5. Maybe not the best ale to finish off the afternoon but who stronger and better from the county town of Glamorgan 🏴
I now have my leave for the bus station time well under control. I was very, rather sleepy on the way home but I did get off at the right stop.
